Nikon D800E with Nikon 28-300mm lens

I have written in the past about the Nikon 28-300mm and the versatility it provides as a travel lens, so I am not going to analyse its pros and cons in detail again. In a few words, it’s a great all around lens with the usual cons of a 10x zoom (inferior image quality but not by that much, and slower apertures). I always add the 50mm f/1.4 in my bag so I pretty much covered for most of my needs.

With the 28-300 I can go from landscapes to birds photography for example without having to change lenses and carry a heavy load all day long with me. It does not do anything perfect, but it can do a lot of things adequately, and that’s enough for me. On the D800E you get one more advantage, I can easily crop up to 450mm equivalent and still have 15 megapixels left. And for web use, I can crop even further ! This lens also has stabilisation so I can get away with slower shutter speeds to anticipate the slow apertures.

Now, for serious work the 24-70mm, 85mm and 135mm are invaluable, but for the casual trip, this lens is really great.
