I recently purchased the Nikon 85mm f/1.8G lens. It was a lens I was thinking of buying for a long time, to complement my 135mm f/2. I am mostly a prime lens shooter, with the exception of the 24-70mm which is a very convenient lens especially when I am making videos.
I could sell the 135mm and get the 70-200mm f/2.8, but I don’t have much use for a telephoto lens (the 28-300 serves my needs for telephoto use, not the best image quality and speed, but it gets the job done). The 135mm is my favorite Nikon lens, so the 85mm fills a gap between 70mm and 135mm and the f1.8 aperture is better than f/2.8 both for speed and dof.
For a while I thought about the wonderful 85mm f/1.4G which is a superb lens by all means. But after doing some heavy reading on the internet, I decided that the price difference is huge to justify such an investment I would have to part with one of my film cameras to cover the cost and by seeing comparison between the two lenses, I opted for the f/1.8).
The size of this lens is exactly what I need, not too large or heavy, just the right dimensions for me. This is a very sharp lens and the DoF it provides is excellent for isolating the subject form the background. Its a great portrait lens but just as my 135mm, I use it for different styles of photography.
After a couple of weeks of using this lens, all I can say is that I am very pleased with its performance. Considering the price, this is a great lens.
