Boat on lake

Two versions of the same photo, I could not decide which I like better, so I’ll post both.

Image taken with the Nikon D800E and 24-70mm lens. Shot on a tripod to ensured maximum quality, and I also used a LEE ND HARD Grad 0.9 (3 stops) filter to get the best exposure I could.

I’ve been reading your blog for a while and enjoy your posts but for some reason your images look flat, and washed out on my monitor at work (where images from other sites look fine).

Have you deliberately prepared them to look like a faded colour print from the 1960s for effect or is there likely something wrong with monitor?

Hi Dave, thanks for your remark. I don’t generally intend for my images to have this look, except of course in specific cases. Since I print a lot of my photos, I try to process them in a way that can match the printer in a local photo lab. I haven’t done any calibration for this, I just do it from experience after making hundreds of prints at this specific lab. When viewing the photos at my wife’s computer, they look pretty much the same, so I don’t know why they look so flat on your monitor. In any case, you gave me a good reason to view my blog posts on the monitors of my friends and see how they look !
