When I travel with friends my needs for camera gear are quite different than a photo trip (as it should be!). A dedicated photo trip means a full trunk of bags while on a vacation type trip I will carry no more than a medium size bag.
I have a Lowepro bag that has been my favorite for traveling, I will post a picture of it at the future, since I have forgotten which model it is. I have changed gear combos many times, but after many experiments I have found the following combos to suit me perfectly for a short vacation trip.
– Sony NEX 5N and Plaubel Makina 67 with four lenses for the NEX: Sony 18-55 and 16mm, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.1 and Leica Tele-Elmarit 90mm f/2.8.
– Sony NEX 5N and Leica M7 with Sony 18-55, Sony 16mm, Voigtlander Super Wide Heliar 15mm f/4.5, Leica Elmarit 28mm f/2.8, Voigtlander Nokton 50mm f/1.5, Leica Tele-Elmarit 90mm f/2.8.
I will also carry a polarizer filter for the NEX and the Plaubel, the NEX remote control for long exposures, a couple of SD cards, a spare NEX battery and a couple of film rolls for my film camera.
This is a very convenient and light combo (although the Plaubel adds some weight, but not to a point that it tires me).
The NEX is really the core of my travel system. Its a camera that I can shoot in any conditions, day and night. When mounting Leica and Voigtlander lenses it can produce great quality photos. Focusing manually with these lenses is a breeze with the EVF and focus peaking system. Its actually so easy, that I will always choose the Nokton f/1.1 or f/1.5 over the e-mount Sony 50mm f/1.8 which really has seen minimal use since I purchased it. I find its focus to be very slow so I prefer the manual 50mm Voigtlanders which are also faster. (I have recently tried the Sony 35mm f/1.8 and I found its focus to be excellent, I was really impressed, but I already own a Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4 and Leica Summarit 35mm f/2.5 so there is no reason to invest in one more lens).
The NEX can also shoot great short videos, so this is one more reason to use it as my main travel camera. I can only imagine how a full frame NEX will be, it will probably be a superb all around camera.
All images below were taken with the Sony NEX 5N.
